I feel like your first day as a high school freshman is one of those things that everyone gets nervous about. I don't care who you are, there's no way entering a bigger school with people you've never met before & being surrounded by people who are bigger and seemingly cooler doesn't psyche you out. I can promise you though, it's not as bad as it sounds. In order to help any incoming freshman by easing their minds, I'm going to share some things that I wish someone had told me before I walked through those doors on my first day.
First off, because the school is most likely four times the size of what you were used to, I would definitely recommend walking through the school and finding all of your classes before school starts. Most schools offer some sort of orientation to let newbies do this, so, if you have the chance, take it! I would walk through your schedule two or three times in the order that you're going to be going in when it's the actual school day. Knowing where you're going definitely eases your nerves for the first day. If there's absolutely no way you can find your classes before school and you walk in completely lost, don't sweat it! The rest of your class is most likely feeling just as lost as you are. Don't be afraid to ask someone who does know the school. The upperclassmen aren't as intimidating as they seem, & because most of them remember being in your shoes on their first day, they'll most likely be sympathetic and help you out.
My next tip is something that I didn't do, and I promise, it'll make your life easier if you do it. High school is a lot more serious than middle school, with a GPA to worry about, it's important to do your best, especially your freshman year. So, when you go to school the first day, don't expect it to be a blow off day. There are teachers who are going to give you assignments the first day, and it's better to walk in expecting it, rather than expecting nothing & being bombarded with work. It most likely won't be very much, but I had a lot more homework that first day than I was hoping for.
If you want to go into school already knowing people, joining a sports team is the best way to do that. The majority of them practice during the summer, so it gives you time to get to know your team & you'll be able to see more familiar faces that first day. Most sports also have a period dedicated to practice, so you'll have one class that you're already comfortable going to. If you're not athletic, or you just don't want to join a sport, the next best thing is joining a club. There typically aren't very many clubs that will take up a class period, and if there are, they're most likely not open to freshman, but you'll still be able to meet people with similar interests as you. It's the easiest way to make friends, and the club topic is an easy conversation starter (if you're like me, then this makes life SO much easier).
My final tip, is to just go in with an open mind. Be nice to people, and try to get out of your comfort zone by talking to new people. By talking to other people, you'll be able to see that you're not alone, and everyone else is feeling just as nervous as you are. There's no doubt that high school is hard, but it's also only four years. Once those four years are up, you're moving on with your life, so enjoy it! Just remember, you're not the first, and you're not the last to go through it. You might as well make the best of it.
GOOD LUCK! I hope you all have a great year at school(:
